Why we never want 'parental alienation' listed on the DSM as a recognized syndrome. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
If 'Parental alienation' were a listed 'mental disorder' on the DSM, the same actions committed against another parent would be considered as acceptable. Violations currently committed against another parent are punishable by law.
Currently, a parent who prevents visitations is currently considered to be 'in contempt of a court order'. The parent in violation can be fined and even jailed.
Once parental alienation is listed on the DSM, the same violation(s) would be treated as a mental disorder. The violator would be ordered to submit to counseling for treatment, instead of being punished by contempt orders by the family courts.
Before you rally to have PAS on the DSM remember;
A person with a 'disorder / syndrome' such as PAS, cannot control their actions.
Including PAS on the DSM REWARDS the bad behaviors & actions of the violating parent.
Nan's opinion: Psychiatrists and psychologists have caused far more harm to family court cases than have helped. Including Parental Alienation on the DSM as a mental disorder, would be a huge money maker for psych's, court guardian-ad-litems, lawyers. Families and taxpayers will pay the price, and not just financially.
